Hey Kathy (presentation colors question)

Hey Kathy (presentation colors question)

I remember a while back you had a problem with the colors of parts not
working correctly in presentation views. I searched the support group but
couldn't find the right thread (probably looked right over it). What did
you finally find out about this? The reason I ask is that I'm seeing it in
R6 as well. A part that has two colors on it is coming through as one solid
color. Also textures that are different on two different parts are showing
as the same texture in the IPN. Figured I'd go straight to the
"presentation queen"

Thanks,

My problem was that I had altered the default colour in one part file. Once
I changed the default back to the original and used a different name
everything worked out fine. As to the other with two colours. If you
select the part in the IPN, what does the style drop down say? I think it
needs to be As Material if I remember correctly.

They are As Material. Perhaps it's since I took the same color Green(flat)
and added a different texture to it in two different files?

As for the problem with a part that has two colors on it not displaying
properly I was incorrect before. It appears properly in the IPN but a IDW
of the IPN causes them to show in the same color. This, I'm thinking, may
be a bug..

Having any two colours with different textrues would propably do it. I have
not installed 6 so I can't comment about a bug. Maybe someone else can try
and duplicate it.

I'm more concerned about the second part of the problem.

It seems that is you assign a part two different colors via the properties
method (no textures involved) only the base color shows in the ipn.

No, Kathy I appreciate the help on the first one as well. It made sense.
I'm sorry, I didn't mean to sound like I was not appreciative.

I think both of these are bugs. Haven't heard from any Autodeskers lately..
you guys around?

It would propably help with others if we could get the problem to be
replicated. Can anyone try this and see if they have a problem in IV6?

I just looked at a simple presentation where I added two differently colored
features to my parts - both cuts, but one was colored with texture - and the
colors were there.

Of course - I'm using a recent internal build that you'll see as a SP soon.

BTW - With Bill's (announced) departure - I have inherited "presentations" -
so as we move forward those will be something in which I'll be more
involved.

Gary can you try just using two different colors. (not using textures).
See if they come through. Also are you looking at the IPN (they work here)
or at the IDW (here is where we loose the colors).

"I have inherited presentations"

Lucky you

There are defiantly some things about ipns that make them a big hassle to
use. They definitely need improvement. (Not saying Bill wasn't doing his
job - I just didn't know ipns were his job)

Please let us know who inherited IDW's? And where are they? 😉

I get the same problem when in IDW. when i insert an assembly, the

assembled parts are all the same colour, but when i open the assembly

everything looks fine. JP

Are the colours in the assembly or in parts? If in parts they should show
up. If they are in the assembly save a design view (with a name like
colours) with the parts you want visible and the colours that you want.
Then apply the design view to your IDW view. select the view and right
mouse button RMB apply design views. Select your design view and the IDW
you want it applied to. This should work. It is more complicated if there
is an IPN in there.

It gets worse. If I make an IDW of a two color part it comes through OK.
If this two color part is used in an assembly and I make an IDW of the
assembly the colors are lost.

See CF for an example...(in a min)

Sean - I was only looking at the *.ipn - I'll look at the *.idw and I will
make sure that if it doesn't work in the drawing, it will be made known.

I know of internal responsibility changes which will augment Bill's
announced departure that I'm not at liberty to discuss in this forum.
Suffice it to say that a pretty high-powered team is being assembled to
tackle opportunities remaining in the areana of drawings.

Also recall that this area is intended to be a peer-to-peer discussion group
and you should not necessarily expect product designer participation from
all Autodesk pd's like you have seen from Bill and I. There are members of
the team who chose to participate and who contribute when they can - however
I think you would all agree that rather than having 100's of developers
reading the 300 to 400 posts here each day - you'd rather have them writing
code?

I agree to a point, but over the years I have noticed that the ones that do
occasionally drop in and check the Pulse of the newsgroup tend to be the
ones I have the most respect for. They "Appear" to be the ones most
interested in hearing the situation from the trenches, and fixing the
problems they might not hear about otherwise. I have seen a number of
enhancements or bugs fixed directly from a developer paying attention to the
newsgroups every once in a while. That is not to say the others aren't
doing just as good a job, but we like to know we are being paid attention to
once in a while

IMO one of the best at paying attention to what is happening in the outside
world is still working on the other program.
