I Just downloaded a student version of Autodesk inventor professional 2012 and I need help changing a file type from 2012 to a 2011 file type, how do I do that?
Your only option is to export as a step or iges file and open in 2011..
Once a file has been saved in a newer version it can no longer be directly opened in an older version... 3d cad programs in general are not backward compatible.
Once you get the part back into 2011 via the use of a neutral file format like STEP (*.stp) it will be a base solid (no feature tree).
You can still edit using any of the usual tools.
If you need to recover the feature tree for some reason you can do this with the free Feature Recognition add-in avialable here http://labs.autodesk.com
You can't change the file version type to 2011.... and there is no 'save as' functionality. STEP is your option, but you will lose the intelligence. It will be converted to a 'base' model.

Of course there is. Go back and read the previous responses to the original question.
Correct.... 🙂 you get the Gold Star.
