GET MODEL DIMENSIONS

I used tolerancing in a model so that they would carry over to the idw. When
I right click on the view and get to 'get model dimensions', it does
nothing. It doesn't say that it can't do it , won't do it or doesn't feel
like it. It just does nothing. What am I doing wrong?

Kevin,

Are the drawing views where you are asking for model dimensions the views as
where the dimensions were placed in the model? They have to be the same or
you will not get model dimensions in the view.

Get Model Dimensions only displays dimensions on the same plane as the view,
or if you prefer, perpendicular to your camera (eye) position. That was by
design.
No doubt there is room for enhancement and I'm certain there are some
planned.

Bill,

You said the model dimensions only display on the same plane as the view was
by design.

Can you explain the logic behind that decision?

I would guess that if you had dims on two or more sides it would make a
pretty messy drawing having dims front and back of the part and lines
sticking up on the side of the part representing dims on the side similar to
the way a sketch looks if a sketch on another plane is turned on. You have
another way of looking at it?

The problem with the current concept is you have to place model dimensions
in the plane you want them to show up in the 2D drawing. And when you need a
detail view of a revolved feature you have to model the profile above the
rotational axis and in the view you want the dimensions to show up in the 2D
drawing.

When you are designing a part you should not have to think about where the
dimensions need show up in the 2D drawing.

Because of this problem, most of the time I place dimensions as required and
forget about trying to use model dimensions. However, when it comes to the
detail view problem you have to use model dimensions because most of the
time the detail is just on one side of the center line. Then you can not
place a dimension manually.

Oh yeah ... I can see where you're coming from. Actually I only use get
model dims mainly when I want to drive the model from the idw, otherwise I
usually use manual dims. Not sure exactly what you mean when you say you
have to get model dims to dim a detail view. I don't remember a situation
where I had to do that. Doesn't the view the detail is taken from normally
have a dim or two from CL/wherever to a line shown in the detail view;
something that ties the relationship together? Maybe I just haven't run into
that yet. Least I see what you're thinking now. Thanks ... hadn't thought of
that.

Thanks. I guess that makes sense. I didn't think about because it's a
revolved part.

I used to be a Pro/E user and was in the habit of showing model dimensions
in almost all cases. It was a preferred approach which made most of the
drawing bidirectional with the model. As much as I like using Inventor now,
the model dimensions are nearly useless in a drawing. Unless it is the
simplest model and very well planned, you cannot show the model dimensions
and get what you really need. It also takes a tremendous amount of cleanup.
You cannot show model dimensions by selected feature or other filters. It
is an all or nothing deal that I choose nothing. I can much more easily add
the dimensions I need to existing views. Unfortunately, these dimensions
cannot be used to update the model. I have to go to the model to make my
changes. I hope that Inventor will be able to make a lot of improvements in
this area in R8 or 9. I really like using Inventor, but I still miss a
couple of things from the Pro/E days.

I don't imagine it applies in your case, but I frequently make my views from
assemblies to allow for PEM fasteners, etc. Whenever you do this, the show
model dimensions will not find any part dimensions to display. The view
must be of the part only.

I'm definitely one of the "drawing module needs redemption" choir. ... "Yeah
