There is some confusion in this thread that I can hopefully clear up.
First there is an Inventor DWG file type and an Autocad DWG file type and they are different.
To open an "Inventor DWG" file in Autocad older than 2007 (might have to with 2007 also) you need to download and install the appropriate DWG True Connect Object Enablers available in this link
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/search?la=en&siteID=123112&catID=2334116&linkID=9242018&qt=d...Then you can simply open the Inventor DWG in Autocad... (no need to do a "save copy as" to autocad .dwg file type). Doing it this way allows you to make simple changes to the Inventor DWG file in Autocad and have those changes show up in Inventor when you reopen the Inventor DWG file. There are some limitations...see the read me file for the object enablers you need from the link above.
If all you want is to do a "save copy as" from Inventor to save it as an Autocad DWG file (like if a customer is requesting an autocad file if they don't have Inventor) then you simply do a "save copy as" from your idw or Inventor DWG and before you hit save, press the options button and select the version of Autocad you want it to be compatible with.
