Is it possible to import an assembly in iges format and then turn the surfaces into solids as group? Currently I have to open each part, stitch and save again to create the ipt

STEP is a better format than IGES.
Yah....100% agree. If possible import as step.
Inventor its not the best tool to close imported surfaces.
Inventor does a repair automatically but it makes it translucent, I can either open each part and uncheck translucent, or the best thing is to open each part and stitch.

How it opens all depends on how you set the import Options and the original data.
It might be possible to set the options to automatically Heal, Stitch and Promote.
When you get a translucent body it is a composite surface body (which might be fine for your uses).
