Emboss/Engrave

Having real difficulty getting a flat faced engraved with text.

I have an existing part with IN/OUT water ports. I am trying to engrave
the ports with the appropriate text.

I create a new sketch on the face. I then use the Create Text button to
create "OUT". I then dimensioned the box to the correct location. Then
select Finish Sketch. From Part Features, I select the Emboss Button.
Here's where I run into trouble. I cannot select just the text box. IV
wants to select the entire face. When I did finish the engrave, the
entire face was cut but the engrave depth (.1), leaving just the inside
diameter of the letter "O".

Can anyone tell by this flimsy excuse for an explanation as what I'm
doing wrong?

This is one of Sean's most favorite aspects of IV.... its near useless
selection capabilities.

Basically, go in and select everything including the background then
shift-select (remove) the background.

Make sure you hold your tounge just right but try not to drool on the
keyboard.

Yes this is IV 7 SP1. But it still is not functioning. I did get the
text to look like outline text, but still no Engrave.

I posted a avi on 9/01/03 with subject TEXT AND EMBOSS to IVCF that might help. Try to
select the text, not the bounding box.

Also I work with Application options>>Sketch >> Automatic reference edges for new sketch
turned off and Autoproject edges during curve creation on. This makes it so generally the
only selectable thing is the text. 8^)

All you need to do is click on the emboss icon, then put your cursor over the text and right click to select other. When the text is selected, click on the green box in the middle and continue. This should select it.

I posted it back into IVCF, I had no trouble engraving it. I hope it is what you wanted.

Yes, this is exactly what I was after.(I guess I'm trying to say "Thank
You".) Still unsure though as to why I could not accompish this here.

Don't think hardware is a problem as this computer is only 6 weeks old
and was specifically purchased to run IV.

I didn't do anything special, when I clicked on emboss

the face highlighted I then hovered over the text

once the pick box appeared I clicked the arrow

until the text changed color ( although in this case it

wasn't much of a color change) then clicked the directional arrow,
then egrave from face (middle button) and
clicked picked the text as the profile, then OK.

I've had people do things in here for me when I've tried everything too
just one of those things.

try playing around with it on a different part.

I'm just glad I was finally able to help someone out.

I've gotten plenty of help in here, so it's nice to repay the favor.

Try this
Edit the sketch, and delete the projected top and right lines. Exit the sketch and the
only selectable things should be the text.

Chris,

Without looking at your file, and since you are on a fairly fresh
install, what is the Locate Tolerance set to on your system?

App Options->General Tab.

I usually run at 3 unless I get into some hairy IDW's then I'll go down
some more. This means that the "selection" area around the cursor is
3pixels. The max is 10.

I believe out of the box is 5 which, IMO, is too broad of a "stroke" and
will cause selection fits.

Quinn, I never knew anything about that before.

I just checked mine and it is set at 5, I didn't have any problems picking the text to engrave.
I'll have to play around with that number

and see what difference it makes in the future.

I'll have to check these few things.

The locate tolerance was set to 5. I changed it to 3. I'll see what
happens in the future.

Thanks to everyone for your help..
