Did u see this message when u try to open a .idw?

Previous file xxxx contains a different component from selected file ?????. Components substitution is not permitted in Drawings. Either locate the original component or click on Skip.

then, IV7 refuse to open the .idw file no matter I do.

I have the corresponding .iam and ,ipn files openning at the same time. AFter last time openning the .idw file, I did some components substitution, which includes replacing xxxx by ?????. And I did the global update.

What's wrong?

This means you have an IDW that is looking for file 12345. You have
taken another file (34567) and renamed it 12345. IV will not allow you
to change the file an IDW was created from that way.

Delete the replaced part out of the assembly.
Save. Open IPN and IDW. Save. Place the part back in the assembly and
save.  Open IPN re-tweak.  Save.  Open IDW.  Replacing and
IPN's and IDW's can be a hit or miss.  They want to remember the old
part.

Hello, thanks for the reply. Why IV don't allow me to change? I changed iam and the corresponding ipn is updated automatically and when I try to open the idw which created from ipn, it suppose to update automatically with the updated ipn view. Anyway, it should not refuse to open.

I really don't understand how Autodesk think about this. why don't just follow the common sense?

I did what u told , well, partially. after I saved the iam and ipn and when I try to open the idw, IV shut down without any warning.

Can you put the old part back in the assembly and
presentation and then try to open the IDW.

I've had this problem before - well it's not really a problem, just the way that Inv. works - and I just used the Design Assistant to make sure all the referenced files in the idw. were correct and to change what needed to be changed.
