Designing a knife

Can somebody here give me some pointers on how to put a cutting edge or grind on a knife. I'm new to inventor 2012 and I've been trying to figure out how to do it ?????

Attach your ipt file here.

Find the red End of Part marker at the bottom of the feature tree.

Drag the red EOP to the top of the feature tree hidding all features.

Save the file with the EOP in this rolled up state.

In Windows Explorer right click on the filename and select Send to Compressed (zipped) Folder.

Attach the resulting *.zip file here.

I didn't see any solid geometry on which to put a sharp edge.
I noticed that you used 14 identical dimensions rather than 1 dimension and equal constraints.

I recommend you start here

Once you have a solid to sharpen - post back for the next step.

Hi,

I did an on-line tutorial a long time ago that takes you through the steps of making a Diver Knife.

Not too sure if the sites is still active, but if you Google "Ragde diver knife" and search the images you will find a comprehensive step by step method of producing the blade and handle.

The tutorial is for (dare I say it) Solidworks, but most of the methodology can be replicated on any cad package.

Hope this helps

Mark

Hi tasdevil,

I don't have Inventor 2012 loaded at the moment (only 2013 and 2010), so I created the attached file in Inventor in Inventor 2010 so you can open it and look at the feature tree. Take note of how this model is created with simple sketches which are fully dimensioned and constrained. Here's a link discussing the practice of using simple sketches to create simple features for a complex part:

http://inventortrenches.blogspot.com/2011/03/inventor-101-simple-fully-constrained.html

It's often helpful to think about how the part would be made. In the case of the knife it would start out as a flat bar blank. So you might start your model off the same way.

To create the sharpened edge, you can use a sweep or loft as I did, but there might be other ways to ge the same result.

Note my model is just for demonstration, it might not be the best way to create an actual knife.

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis
