Creating a part in empty space between parts

To make an ANSYS analysis, I need to create a part resembling the air between the parts in my assembly. How do I do this in Inventor?

not sure its the best way but,

derive a new part of the assembly containing the 2 parts. deselect solid body and bring them in as surfaces. delete the faces you dont want and use boundry patch to create the extra surfaces you need. stitch them all together and that should be your airspace part...

ok that doesnt work too gud Message was edited by: stee

derive the assembly into part x, derive new part as surface using part x, then do your deleting faces, boundry patches, surface lofts, stitching and sculpting...

Try this --

* make a part that is a cube big enough to contain your assembly - set its
material to something transparent like "Glass" -- save it and call it
"air.ipt"
* make an assembly containing "air.ipt" and your real assembly positioned
inside the "air" part -- save it as "assembly+air.iam"
* make a new part -- exit the sketch environment and do
"Derived Component" - choose "assembly+air.iam" -- click on the + in
front of "assembly:1" to change it to - (minus) meaning "subtract volume"
(it should turn blue) -- hit OK
* set the material of this part to something transparent like "Glass" and
you should see the hollow left by your assembly in the middle of the "air"
* save this part as "air-assembly.ipt"

Is that what you're looking for?
