Create Non-Circle Hold

How can I create a hole in a part using a sketch? I tried using the create hole command on a sketch and it still only wants to create a circular hole. How can I create a hole such as a rectangle in inventor? Please explain with as much detail as possible.

If you are trying to create a hole (of whatever shape) in a 'standard par't then create a sketch and EXTRUDE CUT it away.

If you are in a 'sheetmetal par't then create a sketch on a face and use the CUT command.

We really need more to give more exact detail. Inventor version and part or sheetmetal environment.

yes, the hole command only does circular holes. Sketch your shape and then extrude it using the cut option.

of course with extrude you will get no hole data if you try to dimension it with the hole dimension in the drawing such as you can with a drilled hole.

Another option would be to utilize the FEATURE tool.
