Compatible Laptop Video Cards

Can anyone tell me who makes a good laptop (preferably a full-sized laptop) that has a video card that is compatible with Inventor? Gateway only uses the Mobility Radeon 7500, Dell has the 32MB GeForce4 Go and the ATI Mobility Radeon 9000, but from what I've heard the Radeon's don't work with Inventor.

I was once told that Autodesk talked to ATI about paying more attention to having their cards more CAD compatable and as the story goes ATI basically shrugged of Autodesk with a "we don't care about the CAD industry" attitude.

because they know that the cards dont work well for
CAD. they are good for gaming and video capture and things like that, but not
for cad.

Just
out of curiosity, is this why ATI only rates the CAD functionality on the
cards they build for CAD work, rather than NVIDIA whom, it seems, rates all of
their cards.

That's kinda dumb.....though maybe not considering I've heard that the FIRE GL line of cards are supposed to be their CAD cards.

Anyways, what would a Quadro4 run for?

the fire gl's are the cad cards. the radeon's are
the game cards. the quadro's start around $500 for the 700xgl

One last question:

Are there any know compatibility issues with the GeForce series?

Pricewatch.com shows PNY Quadro4 550XGL (a decent
entry level card) for about $240.  Quadro4 750XGL (mid level) for about
$350+.  Quadro4 900XGL for about $520+.

Oopps.  Sorry, didn't pay enough attention,
those cards are for desktops.  The price difference is not only going to be
the video, but the laptop as well.  It appears that only Dell and Fujitsu
offer laptop with the Quadro4 Go GL video.  Dell and Toshiba seem to be the
outlets for the GeForce4 Go video.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that all the
new FireGL's are based on the Radeon chipsets.

Hi,

in any case choose the ATI. I have a inspirion 8100
with an ATI mobility radeon 7500 64MB and it is impossible to work with
Inventor or any programm who use the 3D or the same type. (exemple
Designspace)

If you want a good laptop, the Siemens Celsius
Mobile H is a good choice.

Regards

Dominique

Imagine that!
Searching through that website, I found a dealer just a few blocks away from
my home.
Last time I looked - about a year ago, I couldn't find a single US dealer
for the H series.

Dell is showing 2 1Gig M50's on their refub site, one for $2,991 and
another for $3,391. This is less than the Toshiba and has more memory.
Both are 2 Gigahertz, actually, I don't see a difference between the two.

Just as an update, I ended up going with the Dell with the ATi Mobility Radeon 9000, because it fit everything else I needed to do. I loaded Inventor on it to see how it worked and it works beautifully. I can load mulitple windows and I've had no problems with it thus far.

Maybe ATi has gotten their act together after all; my friend is using the 9700 Pro and he's having no troubles at all as well.
