Can't get a section view of a part

I have a brake caliper that was imported from ProE. It is saved as a .ipt
now. Whenever I have it in and .idw, it acts very strangely. If the view
is placed as 'Hidden Line' or 'Hidden Line Removed', you can't see the part
at all. If you place it as 'Shaded' it shows on the screen, but you can't
select it in the window, only in the browser. The real problem that I have
is that I can't create a section view of any assembly containing this part
and having the section line going through the caliper. I'm looking for a
workaround.

Any ideas?

Mike

Sorry I don't have a solution for you, but I've seen this before. I'm
assuming for the moment that it was a STEP translation. It seems to happen
most often with "consumer" type products done in Pro/E; i.e., parts with
smooth surfaces, not simple prismatic parts. I don't know if it's a problem
with Pro/E's STEP export module, or Inventor's STEP importing. Just wanted
to let you know that you're not alone...

Thanks for the reply. I imported the part as a .prt. I was hoping that if
I created a derived component, IV would like it better, but it doesn't.

Try going through AutoCAD.
Also, if you can get the ProE file you can then open in ProDesktop Express
(which is FREE) and resave as STEP, that way you have some control over the
save options, to try multiple things.
Just something I would try.

I will try ProDesktop Express, since I have the ProE file.

If you can get a neutral of the file, try importing
with the healer on. It will sometimes help.

If you can't get something working and can post
or email the .prt, I'll see if there's anything that I can
do with it. If you can't post, I'd suggest that you
send the file to Adesk. This is a common problem,
not limited to Pro/E files, nor are the problems limited
to drawing view generation, and they should be on it
like a duck on a June bug.

Are you using v7 or v8? Just curious as to whether
v8 made any improvements in this area.

Okay, I'll post in in both .ipt and .prt.

I am using R8, but oddly, my drawings made in R7 or earlier show the part
just fine as long as I don't section it, but when they were migrated to R8,
poof! the views magically disappeared everywhere.

Now I can't show the part in a .idw at all.

I downloaded that ProDesktop in an effort to convert the model to a
different format before importing it to IV, but the access key for the
software that PTC promised in 1 hour hasn't shown up in the last 3 days. I
called them, but since the support for that product is totally automated, no
one can do anything to see if my key has been sent. I guess the support
program must have spontaneously written and installed itself.

mike,
I was able to write an acis out pro desktop and it shows up in idw
fine (R8). If you need that I can zip it up and post back. Funny, but
the step version won't section to save it's life.

Hi, Mike.

I had much the same results a Darvin. In IV, I couldn't get a section through
the (on a plane defined by both axes) pin bosses until I deleted the fillets
around the bosses. I put a .sat as a reply to your post in ivCF that has
those fillets and a couple of other fillets and rounds deleted. I think it
will work ok if you can use it like that. Import with the healer on.

I also put a .sat and .stp in ivCF under "caliper (*)". If the folks at Adesk
want to attack the problem they'll be good working material. (Try each with
healer on and off.)

Just F.Y.I., I used to use the program you downloaded for assembly
documentation when there were imported parts in the assembly. Works better
than IV and the dwg out is cleaner, should additional clean up in acad be
necessary.

Thanks for the parts guys! I'll be able to use these models. I still never
got a key from that other company for their free software.

Incidentally, I noticed that another part that was imported from .iges is
acting strangly. When I imported it in R7, I had to stitch everything
together. Anyway, R7 would allow me to place constraints on the faces, but
R8 won't allow it. I went back and imported the .iges with R8 and it popped
in as a solid immediately and I can place constraints on the faces. Weird.
I'm happy to not have to select all those faces to stitch though!
