Bill of Materials via Configurations in Assembly Files

Working on a project (as analyst) for retrieving the Bill of Materials using the Inventor API and have a couple basic questions for Inventor users. Within a single Assembly file, there is the ability to establish multiple configurations. We are investigating the viability of allowing a user to choose and retrieve the Bill of Materials from one of those established configurations within that file.

  1. From what I understand and can determine within Inventor, the way to establish Bills of Material and the most logical place from which to pull the configurations for retrieval is based on the Tables (likely via iAssemblies). Is that a commonly used feature and is this the most logical area from which to obtain BOM data based on configurations?

I understand that different representations can suppress different parts, etc., but when you look at the Bill of Materials via the Manage tab, it appears that they are typically associated with Tables. See attachment. Is that an accurate statement?
