Autodesk Vault

I just got out of a meeting with our dealer (Avatech) and thought that I
would pass along a few of tidbits concerning Autodesk Vault:

1. Autodesk Vault will be available to IV subscribers free of any
additional charges. However, you will have to download it. It will not be
sent out on CD.

2. Avatech said the download would most likely be available in August or
September.

3. In the future, Autodesk plans to extend Vault to AutoCAD and Streamline.

Also, I felt obligated to pass along some of the complaints that you all
express so eloquently (i.e. the unfinished nature of several IV features,
the whole IV Pro issue, etc.). I suggested that, at the very least, current
subscribers should be allowed to switch to IV Pro as part of their current
subscription and then just pay the higher subscription fee going forward.
Anyway, they were taking notes and claim to have direct input to higher ups
at Autodesk, so we'll see if anything happens.

The last paragraph sounds good, however, hard to think how something other
than prudent empathy could be expected between a VAR and a customer. Seems
likely at least one Avatech representative reads the group; I saw a reply
from them on the avi thread, so there's a good chance they've been aware of
the response to Pro on the NG for a good while, I'd think.

Yeah, I agree Larry. I don't really expect any miracles. I also mentioned
the problem with the AVIs on their Web site and that someone from Avetech
had responded. But, I got the distinct impression that these particular
guys had never looked at the discussion group. (I encouraged them to do
so.) In my previous job (I just switched in March), I was the nationwide
CAD Systems Administrator for an Autodesk major account. So, I was used to
having direct contact with Autodesk personnel. The Avatech reps said that
they are going to send me the contact info for a couple of influential
Autodesk guys with whom I am not familiar. So, I am keeping an open mind.
Who knows? If enough of us express the same concerns, maybe they will
eventually listen.

The vault...is it true that you can`t have two files named the same (in
different projects)?
In my case I have plenty projects, and in each project, no file has the same
name, but I create a lot of continuos files within assemblies that I just
leave Inventor to decide the default name (like part5 etc)

So in two different projects these will have identical named files. I know
this probably is not a perfect solution from the start but when you produce
like 10 parts a minute that need to be there but has no intelligent
properties, there is too much hasle to name each part.....actually the parts
I do name usually follows a certain standard, but is the same for each
project.

My Var told me the Vault would not funtion with this. Anyone knows for sure
?
I`ve been told we`ll be getting it mid of July by the way..(Europe)

Regards,
Jorgen

Our VAR hasn't done the seminars for Vault yet. Is it worth checking out?

For the record, I haven't seen a demonstration of Vault. We had a meeting
with Avatech to discuss various things and the topic of document management
came up. I asked if they had heard anything about Vault and as it turned
out, they had just been to some sort of Autodesk training/demo meeting on
Vault last week.

My understanding is that Vault is simply that, a document repository vault.
Vault will provide a much more secure system of document control than is
currently available in IV7. (It currently takes about 2 minutes to get
around the check-in/check-out functionality in IV7.) They also indicated
that Vault will allow you to maintain multiple revision levels of files.
However, Vault will not include more advanced document management functions
such as workflow, collaboration tools, etc. But, once Vault is extended to
Streamline, you could then use the combination of Vault/Streamline for
online collaboration.

As for Jorgen's question about having multiple files with the same name, I
don't have any specific knowledge of that issue with regards to Vault.
However, other vault-based document managements systems that I have
used/investigated in the past would not allow duplicate file names.

I haven't read where anyone is having any problems with this newly released
management tool. Is anyone using it?

If you are not using it, how do people working in groups keep from
overwriting each others work?

Right now I am the only one at my company using Inventor, but that may
change very soon. I am trying to get together how we can have several
people working on the same project and not overwrite each others work.

We use the semi-isolated environment. Works well for three users. We
may add the vault if our VAR gets off the dime and sends it to us before
we have to go banging on their doors.

We use the Semi-isolated enviornment and it works ok for the 5 designers
here. The speed and the reserving capabilities help, but the fact that you
have to switch over to a shared project to use the design assistant to
change file names makes it a hassle. I don't like the fact that there
aren't any good management tools for the semi-isolated enviornment, like a
design assistant for data management.

All of our parts get put on our server under a unique part number, which
keeps file naming problems at bay.

I haven't had time to try the Vault yet, so hopefully this will solve some
of these headaches.

You can just download it from your subscription site.
