AutoDesk Inventor: Extrusion error

I've recently started to learn how to use AutoDesk Inventor but I'm totally stuck with an issue to do with extrusion, basically I've created a Sketch containing multiple shapes on an existing flat surface, however when I try to extrude one of the shapes to create a negative extrusion or hole in the flat surface I keep getting an error message, please see the attached screenshots if you think you can help me out with this, any help would be great.

Your screen shot indicates that you have it set on Join rather than Subtract.  (see attached image)

Try it again, using the Cut extrude icon (2nd row)
