Adaptive parts and tweaking assemblies

I've got a couple mating parts that I'm building in the assembly
environment, one adaptive to the other. Between these two I'll be squeezing
some other components.

My question is, how do some of you handle the adaptive assembly? As a
seperate entity from a normal assembly with constraints? Maybe I started
this off on the wrong foot, but my assembly is "welded" at the point which
the components will ultimately be joined, but in the meantime, for design,
I'd like to be able to slide the components around....which means placing
them in a new seperate assembly.... ? Make sense ?

So I end up with one grounded component, I'd like the other 6 or 7 to be
adaptive, but not "stuck" to their ground.

2 assemblies...or am i missing something?

Thanks
