3d "part" in MDT to Inventor

i converted a large dxf file into MDT 2004, the part is drawn as a 3d object
but no surfaces.... I need to get this part into Inventor, i've tried
exporting the part as iges and step and Inventor says it can't translate,
unsupported geometry types(seems odd that Inventors brother program exports
in an unsupported type) i can get the file into Inventor thru importing dxf
but i only get a 2d top view.... Anybody got any ideas?

Inventor doesn't support the import of 3D wireframe, so you have two
options, either add surfaces in MDT, or recreate the part in Inventor.

Just out of curiosity, what would you do with a 3D wireframe if you could get it into Inventor? J.D.

Drawing a boat hull in inventor, you need to extrude using frames imported from autocad. You also need rails to guide the extrusion. My naval architecture program gives me a 3d wireframe, which would be nice to bring straight into inventor. Lofting to a point at the front of the boat is also a problem.

I am new at IV6 , but from what I could see the IV sketch environment is 2d, so importing a 3d drawing results in a 2d projection of the drawing being imported.

model around it... most of the iges data brought in
is basically 3d wireframe.... don't understand your question...

model around it? In a parametric solid modeler what would the history tree of sketches look like in the browser? You would have to profile each sketch like using MDT. In Inventor each 2D would have to be brought in one-by-one as a new sketch. Not easy on a complicated 3D wireframe "part".
