3D Sketch Work Points

Anyone else had this problem?
I'm designing piping using a 3D sketch. I'm defining work planes, axes, and points in a progressive manner. Finally, I connect all the work points I need to use with lines (and bends). All this works great, and I can sweep a profile along this 3D path to create my pipe.
However, the problem arises when I need to modify my 3D path. If I have to delete a section of the line, many times a work point disappears as well...this is not good, because I might have an work axis or plane that depends upon that work point for placement (and now its gone!). This doesn't make sense to me...the work point came before the line, and shouldn't be erased when the line is erased.
Any one have any advice? (Am I making sense?)

It might have to do with using the work points that are in the 3d Sketch
command. You might try using the work points in the assembly panel or part
features.
