2d to 3d utility

I know its just been released, but has anyone tried the 2d to 3d tool avaiable ffrom the labs website? Is it worth a look or is it still easier to scratch build the models?
TIA

It's good of Adsk to announce this is available 😞

I downloaded and installed the FR tool - then forgot about it. Several months later
I imported some dumb solids and a dialogue box pop-up asking if I want to recognise
the features. This has been a very useful tool and if it ever makes it into the RTM
version of Inv it will win a lot of friends.

I'm going to do the same with this 2D to 3D tool - suck it and see.

I tried this one out.
Of course the obvious issue is how it will perform w/ old acad files, and we all know there are a lot of bad acad files out there, where endpoints don't meet, etc.

Personally, I prefer to use old acad files for refrence and just remodel a part, so that I am sure that it is correct, etc.

Nonetheless, the tool is kinda' cool to play w/. It did a couple of simple parts, very well and very quickly, but I was able to break it by doing a more complex part.

From what I have seen...nicely done, but I am staying far away from it.

Why? Because you will have to (fully) constrain the sketches by hand.

I rather re-create the sketches/features in Inventor (in that case I will
know for sure that I can modify it later if required...and it always does
:-) )

It still works on the assumption (far too often incorrect) that your
predecessors drew accurate, well bounded 2D Autocad drawings and never
exploded or overwrote critical dimensions. 😉

I just play it safe and never trust what anyone has drawn in 2D (I mean
c'mon, if it looks good enough on paper it's good enough right?). It
doesn't take much longer to just model it from scratch and you can be sure
it's modeled correctly with appropirate use of constraints and dimensions.
(That's also why I never use autodimension of autoconstrain).

I tried it with a DWG made from an IDW.
And I had an issue with my first attempt, see picture. After creation of the
base view the side view moved away by it's own, look at the red circles.

And we Europeans are not very familiar with 1st angle projection. I've
noticed that with another sample, that I used after the first one.
My very first impressions.

Most likely you don't have adequate permissions to install and register the software. Log in to your machine with Admin privileges and with the UAC turned off.

Inventor 2020, In-Cad, Simulation Mechanical

Just insert the picture rather than attaching it as a file
