Hi All,
I have recently being having an issue with creating a new file.
Navigating to create a new file Inventor 2014 will hang. It may take a couple of hours before it kicks back in to gear. It only does it intermittedly but very unpredictable.
It has only started doing it for a month or two but is starting to get rather annoying.
I have had a hunt around on the net for other users experiecing a similar issue, but couldn't find anything, so excuse me if I have missed it somewhere.
Doens any one know of a solution to this issue?
Thanks in advance.
System:
HPZ620 Late 2013
Windows 7 SP1 64Bit

Possibly a bad User Profile, try logging in with a different User Profile, prefferable one with Admin Priv. If this works then a simple repair of your user profile is required. if not then a re-register in Inventor is another.
Repair Profile:
The steps are as follows (Please substitute as appropriate for your version):
1. Exit Inventor
2. Open Regedit
3. Rename
a. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\Inventor\Current Version
b. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\Inventor\Current Version.org
4. Rename
a. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\Inventor\RegistryVersion0.0
b. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\Inventor\RegistryVersion0.0.org
5. Rename
a. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\Inventor\RegistryVersion18.0
b. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\Inventor\RegistryVersion18.0.org
6. Exit Regedit
7. Rename
a. C:\Users\USERID\AppData\Local\Autodesk\Inventor 2014
b. C:\Users\USERID\AppData\Local\Autodesk\Inventor 2014.org
8. Rename
a. C:\Users\hollanb\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\Inventor 2014
b. C:\Users\hollanb\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\Inventor 2014.org
9. Start Inventor and test.
Note:
RegistryVersion18.0 = Inventor Release 2014
RegistryVersion17.0 = Inventor Release 2013
RegistryVersion16.0 = Inventor Release 2012
RegistryVersion15.0 = Inventor Release 2011
RegistryVersion14.0 = Inventor Release 2010
Register Inventor:
1) Press [Windows] key to open Windows' start page
2) Type "cmd" to find "Command Prompt" > right mouse click on it > select "Run as administrator"
3) On "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type cd "c:\program files\autodesk\Inventor 2014\bin" > Enter
4) Type inventor /install > Enter
5) Wait for 1 min (inventor will be executed background then exit silently)
Hi Blair,
Thanks for your response.
I tried everything suggested. At first it looked promising, but after opening and closing Inventor a couple times the new file dialog started hanging again.
I think you are correct with a bad user profile as when I logged on as administrator on my machine and didn't seem to have any issues.
I tried a repair of inventor but that didn't achieve much.
I am assuming the next option is uninstall>reinstall.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Adrian
My user profile already has admin rights.
I tried the re-register again and it still gives me the smae issue.
Thanks for your help [and patience]
Adrian,
Try deleting C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\Inventor 2014\FileNewSettings.xml.
It will be recreated when the New dialog comes up again. Does it work Ok if you use CTRL+N ?
-Chris
Hi Chris,
I deleted the FileNewSettings.xml and had no luck there.
Using CTRL+N doesn't make a difference. It is still doing it intermittedly but nothing I have tried has sorted it completely.
Any further suggestions?
Thanks,
-Adrian
Adrian,
All I can think of right now is to check where your templates files are defined in yoru current project file. Are they on a network UNC share or a mapped drive ? If so, does it make a difference if you use a project (Default.ipj) where the Templates are on your local drive ?
-Chris
Adrian,
Can you confirm which SP &/or updates you have installed for 2014 ?
There were some changes around the FIle New dialog included in 2014 SP1.
Thanks
Chris
Hi Chris,
Sorry, I meant to put the current SP that I am on in my original post.
SP1 Update 2. I installed update 2 just the other day and had hoped that that would rectify the situation.
I don't think the network is dropping out intermittingly as other the other Three users here have had no problems.
We keep our templates in Vault and check them out to our local machine > save> check in and do this if there are any updates to the templates.
I didn't find any '.lnk' files within our templates folders either.
Thanks again for all the suggestions. I appreciate the help!
Hi Kstate + Chris,
I think I may have tracked down the culprit.
I recently updated and installed 'box sync' by Box.com.
I had un installed this the other day and tested and it didn't seem to make a difference, but I wonder if the regedits + re-register has sorted it out.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
I will try run it without Box Sync and will post back on progress.
Much appreciated
-Adrian
If you had opened something directly from a jump drive, USB stick, or remote file sharing utility, it could be attempting to track down a recently-used path or file which no longer exists but has to plow through a host of potential locations in order to determine such.
This is indeed an issue with the Box client interferring with Inventor's File New dialog.
Currently investigating what exactly is causing the issue. If you exit the Box client then File New should work fine.
Thanks
Chris
Hello All,
This Inventor New File dialog box hang problem should be fixed by any version of Box Sync beyond 4.0.5358.
In our testing with Box Sync version 4.0.5380, the File New dialog behaves responsively.
FYI,
Clare
Thanks Clare,
I haven't tested it for a while, but good to know I don't have to worry about it now.
