did anything significant change from IV6? is it really worth it to release
something every year for something less-so-significant?
or am i so wrong on this one? i just checked the specs and features and
just don't see the great improvements over IV6.

or i could just be illiterate. it happens often so no worries folks.

True the new features are not earth shattering, however I find it
significantly more stable.

The improvement in drawing speed and certain types of arrays makes R7 a must have improvement for us.

More improvements are AutoCAD 2004, Mechanical 2004 and MDT 2004.

Most of the enhancements were behind the scenes to add more stability and
speed. I personally would buy a car that got me more speed and broke down
less often.

This was killed to death in some previous posts, but Autodesk cannot legally
release new functionality without making it a release. Because of the
AutoCAD 2004 release there needed to be the new functionality to write to
that format, so IV 7 was released with the 2004 read/write and performance
upgrades.

Personally I think they should have named it 6.3 instead of 7.

If you require a proper line scale in your drawings, R7 will not be for you.

Matt

P.S. I have ran this issue into the ground also and still will until they
fix it.

I have found jus tthe opposite. I crash two to five times per day. I am
pretty sure that is has to do with the specs of my machine. Here they are.

Dell PWS 350 2.2GHz
512Mb RIMMs (PC1066 | 533 FSB)
to 2.0Gb PC800>
nVidia 750 XGL w/ 128Mb RAM
XP Pro / SP1
IV7

If anyone has gone from the PC1066 to the PC800 to get ability the install
an extra .5Gb of RAM, please let me know. I am looking at urgrading the RAM
but want to max it out. According to Dell, using PC1066 --> 1.5Gb is the
MAX &PC800 --> 2.0Gb is the MAX.

We are also seeing more crashes or should I say i-poofs with 7 but I will
admit to a speed improvement.

We have seen the same thing. But before you start looking at your hardware,
were you running r6 OK. If so, I think it's Inventor.

Nice spelling on my last post! 😞
(I will need to be more diligent about running my spell checker.)

Anyways, I have rebuilt the install and the system runs very well. Did I
mention that it runs VERY well? Still, I am looking at upgrading the memory
on the machine. I am wondering if there are any problems going from the
PC1066 to the PC800? Can IV natively handle the 2Gb or do I need to make
some tweaks?

TIA

Should be no problem, we have a Dell 350 here that we upgraded the RAM
to 1.5GB and added an nVidia 900XGL to as a backup unit. It runs R7
with ho problem

It most probably is a hardware or driver problem and not a problem with
Inventor.
My system is proof positive of this; I was hard locking and IPoofing etc.
many times a day with R7 and with just a video driver change (absolutely the
only change!) I went to rock solid performance with not even one IPoof or
lockup since! Take this from a guy that doesn't cut Adesk much slack when it
comes to Inventor versions after 5.3!

Albert,

You're currently using NVIDIA Quadro4 980XGL, right?

When you say "just a video driver change", are you referring to
NVIDIA driver 40.72 (aka 6.13.10.4072)?

Which video driver caused the frequent crash you experienced previously?

Glenn
