there a way to show only what you cut through in a secion view? In other
words, background geometry is not visible. I can turn the individual lines
off, but that is very time-consuming.

Actually, I was concerned with a section view of an
individual part. I guess there is no quick way in that scenario.

You can turn off the background geometry by right clicking the section through view you have created in the tree - select 'Edit Section Properties' - Change the 'Section Depth' from 'Full' to 'Distance' and then set the distance to be anything less than 5 - this will then hide anything that is in the background of the section view
