"CHANGE REUSE" COMMAND- FRAME GENERATOR INVENTOR 2015

At Inventor 2015 appears a new feature, that it is very useful.

But, It happens something stranged. When you try to reuse members with FG operations, like notch and others, it seems lost the reference, please see this video :  https://screencast.autodesk.com/Embed/Timeline/e54dd283-9860-41a2-a90b-4039f97144d4

In this video I have a C4x5.4 profile with notch and extended profile to face.

I use the "Reuse" Command, and it works fine.

You always have to change the orientation for the member, it seems logical this command it is new.

But for example, If  I try to delete or change another reuse member, then change the orientation of the reused member, and when I try to change again, change to another not desired location...

Anyone with the same?

Hi Jorge

For your orientation issue, please notice that it may vary when you select different position to place frame member. Here is a post for your reference

It is difficult to accept this as a solution, I have test it and it is correct, the behaviour is different when you pick one side or another of the member.

I have the same problem, and I am simply driving crazy with that reuse frame.

I have 3 subs one of them is using reause FG, the 2 others are using FG but not reused frame, even if i am not working on the sub with the reused frame, I lost references, sometime the frame is can be complitly mirrored (with no reference at all) and as it's too long to get it back, my best solution is to close the project and not saving it if i can't undo.

See the 2 pictures, I just made a rebuild to have this result and everything was already updated.

I'm running into a similar issue.  When I edit the skeleton model all of the reused members flip orientation (vertically 180°). I then use the "change reuse" comand and click the reverse member direction.  The result I get is the members shift completely off the line to one side. I go back the the "change reuse" command and click the reverse member direction again, and it shift the member completely off the line in the opposite direction.  I keep playing with the alignment and stuff, but it will not go back to the correct location with out breaking the reuse members.  Now, the funny thing is, that if I go back to the skeleton and change it back to the original configuration. The "change reuse" seems to work the way it is supposed to.  So, what is the point of reusing members if you loose the ability the edit the frame skeleton, the whole reason to using FG in the first place!

I noticed that this thread was started 10 months ago, has anything been done to correct this bug yet?

Thanks,

Jake

I've been searching and can't find an answer to this. Autodesk? Is anybody out there? Why does this happen? I had my frame done and just added some points to my skeleton for creating holes in members and when I went back to my frame my reused member was flipped the wrong way?!

I agree, what is the point of reusing frame members if I add 4 points to my skeleton, none of which had to do with any of the planes or sketches that the reused member is based off of, my members go screwy??

Im using 2015 and this is driving me daft.

I have a situation where I select a member to reuse and I select about 20 sketch locations in a straight line pattern. It puts some of them in correctly and some the wrong way round even though i select the same place on all lines.

Useless feature.

I'm sure people have their own workaround, but for me, we just add all separate members and give them the same part number and combine them in the BOM. Such a pain, but seems to be the only way. And it doesn't seem like Autodesk cares.. surprise surprise

Hi John

Could you send me the sample file which make you headache?  For frame members, Stock number is used for sum up, so different part number (different length but same stock number) can be merged in BOM.

Jingyi,

There is already a case open about this issue: Case #09728018, I believe there is more than one. The following is a thread with a dataset posted https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-forum/losing-hours-of-productivity-due-to-serious-frame-gene...

How about instead of Autodesk sitting on their hands and doing nothing except asking for datasets, you actually do something about it?

Hi Jimmy

I read the post before,my colleague also replied on the post, it's tricky to place reused member, sometimes, you need more time to change its orientation. We would like to know more customer workflow and expected behavior, that's reason we ask for dataset and detailed information.

I agree with you that FG Reuse still needs to improve its usability, how about submit your idea and gather more customer support? Even the FG member Reuse is based on customer request on Inventor Idea Station.

That thread is from 2014 and it seems autodesk has done absolutely nothing. It's very frustrating when datasets are given and basically ignored for three years. This is a very simple problem to replicate; a dataset shouldn't even be required. Draw a box, place a member and reuse it, change one of the reused member's orientation. Then change the length of one line and update the frame. You will see the problem, because the reused members will not have kept their orientation and will have flipped back to its original orientation. There is no need for more datasets. What is required is for autodesk to actually do something. This has been a problem for a long time. I find it very difficult to believe you need more datasets to understand the problem.
Can you tell me anything that has been done with the case? Or has it been completely ignored for 3 years?

Hi Jingyi,

I'm just wondering if you have done anything about this problem, since the last post. Any looking into the case, brought it up with any other employees? I'm hoping you will help to get something started with this problem, or continue with it, since there is more than one case opened and plenty of data sets, including the link to one in my previous post. Since this is quite a significant problem with frame generator and it has vases open, I wonder if you could give me an update or at least post links to the open cases.

To be honnest i completly forgot that feature and just saw after 3 months it still with inventor 2016, Autodesk better to remove this feature and try to optimizae the softawre 🙂

Hi Jimmy

I fully understood your pain points, since I tried the Reuse and Change Reuse command myself, I agree with this feature is inefficient at all. Personally, I thought it would be much better if there were graphic preview, orientation indicator, or support pattern command. I will forward this thread to engineering team and add my comments.

Since Idea Station is an important platform to gather customer request and prioritize them. Much appreciated if you cast votes or submit new ideas and share your thought/suggestion on how to improve it.

Also dont forget if you rename your frame generator filenames in vault. it doesnt change the display name in inventor. you can use the rename node to match your filename/partname but this is manual unless you have part name to match filename.

However the renaming of the group/folder can't be done. It seems this is the display name of the part and all reuses in it are stock number descriptions. i don't find this to be very intuitive. I would like it to be filename or part number to be displayed. especially when using ones own file naming scheme. Or am i going about this the wrong way?

I do like the reuse command but a preview of currently used end treatments to position the part the right way using edge placing and orientation would be nice.

Hi at all Inventor Users,

I have same problems with INV 2016. And it takes about 10-20 seconds if I want to change the reuse (orientation/flip/align) before i can select another framemember (Multi-select). The whole feature displays the outdatet system. This programm works like a programm out of the 90s.

And  I know what I´m talking about. Im working since 2003 with several cad-systems. But we all know: Autodesk has no interest for the problems of their customers. They rather spend theit time in buying more and more useless programms and try to notch them together. Best joke: BIM360! lol

Hello,

Simply an update here.  We found that this issue was fixed and is no longer reproducible within the latest available update for Autodesk Inventor 2016.  Subsequently our team was able to verify the issue to be resolved in newer releases (Inv 2017 & 2018).

Thanks & Regards,

Dan
