inventor 7 no dimension text

After installing Inventor R7 on a new laptop computer and sketching a simple rectangle, I tried to constrain this with dimensions only to find the extension lines and dimension lines visible, but not the numeric value. The lap top is using windows xp. How can I fix this problem?
Thanks in advance.

Most likely a graphics driver issue. What are the results of tools application options hardware tab diagnostics button?

graphics driver has not been certified.
graphics driver ID is ATI technologies Inc.|radeon 9000 ddr x86/sse2\1.3.3344 winxp release graphics driver file ati2dvag.dll is version 6.13.10.6178
Using full optimization (this is the recommended setting
swaptype =2
workarounds = 0x1a0c240
workarounds = 0x00000040
the display is using 32 bit color

I really don't know what all this means.

Well to get anywhere you are probably going to have to edit your registry which may not be something you are comfortable with.

After backing up your current settings you probably need to go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Autodesk\Inventor\RegistryVersion7.0\System\Graphics\Hardware Library 2.0\ATI Technologies Inc. and try changing swaptype to 4 or perhaps some of the text options settings.

In my case with a radeon mobility 7500 in my laptop I had to take some fire gl mobility 7800 drivers, edit the inf strings and install them so IV thought I had a fire gl 7800. That fixed my laptop problems but it requires some expertise to be able to implement.

The Radeon 9000 graphics card does this.  you
will also find that if you load an .idw you will not see any dimensions.
Load another file (anything, an .ipt for example) and then close it again and
all your dimensions in the ipt and in the idw will be there.  Radeon
glitch.  The first file that you open after loading IV does not display the
dimensions. I normally open a model and then close it immediately, then I am
ready to work.

In the meantime you might try changing to the OpenGL driver.

Tools-Application Options-Hardware-Select radio button for OpenGL driver.

Have run into this problem occasionally with my
system we had beleived it to be a video problem,
it would work find for awhile (long time) then
suddenly no dim text... I beleive this to be a
minor but in IV because if you go to "Print
Prview" and close the dims magicaly appear in
you work screen... so at this point I would try
this and if it works maybe we should let AD know
that this is a minor bug that needs looked at.

The dimension text I am talking about is that text used to help constrain the sketch geometry while in the .ipt not the .idw.
I've tried to use the open GL override, but to no avail.
I don't know if it is possible for me to use an older driver or not. Just frustrating right now.

I do this while doing an .ipt and trying to dim and the dim
text does not show up, again just goto print, print preview
and watch you text appear

Tried your suggestion....works fine.
I even created a blank document did a print preview before doing any sketches. Then did a sketch and the dimensions DID appear.
Nice work around, just wish I didn't have to
Many thanks.
