how calculate area for surface

I have a cast aluminum part I need to calculate the surface area for our plating process.  I have done a simple area, its not right (.015ft^2).  I have derived it as a surface but can't get a volume calculation.  Any ideas?

The results in this menu are not correct?

Post the part here.

I can't post the part, it is too big. 9MB

You have imported a part.

First thing I would do is sketch a known length (and units) line and verify that your import is the correct size.

Have you done that?

If you roll up the EOP and zip the file - is it still too large to attach here?

If so, send it to jmather_at_pct_dot_edu

I hope the scale is OK, cause we just got done using this model to build an entire assembly line.

I looked at your second screenshot, the iprops one.

A cube of aluminum that weighs 0.008 lbs is 0.438 inches on a side.  See my screenshot.

Is that close to  the size of your part?

The part is @ 13in X 4in X 3in total.  The surface area of just one face on the where the halves bolt together is 3.902 IN^2

What do you get when you go to the solid part, not the surface import and pull up the iProperties page, physical tab as swalton and myself have shown?

I think your import is boogered. Can you post the part file somewhere? Try zipping it and posting it to some third party host since it exceeds AutoDesk's limit. (I like drop box, personally)

Mine didn't work, it changed but doesn't match yours.

The last number you show is what I get for the pins, not for the caliper body.

Is is because there are 2 bodies and iProperties grabs the first?

Sorry I was playing around with a combine when I snipped that shot. Here's one where all I did is open your file, click rebuild all, open iProperties and click update:

You can select what bodies are considered in the first drop down. "The Part" is everything in the ipt file.

Right Click the Body in the Browser > Properties
