help placing a hole in the outside of a curved surface like a soup can.

I'm trying to learn Inventor so I can help my kids with their class at school. I trying to sketch a part with a hole toward the top of a cylinder. I want the hole to be 1/2 in. down from the top. The help topics I have viewed suggest placing a plane on the outside of the can and a point on that, then drill the hole at that point....I can't figure out how to place the plane.....Help!

Hi b.degraff,

This link illustrates the steps to create a Tangent Workplane using an Origin plane:

Edit:
This animation shows it well also (credit to JDMather for the animated GIF file).

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis
