ground shadow !

Someone here might find this feature useful for some purposes. To me, it
seems to be useless. I'm missing something here ?

No, you are not missing anything. It is useless except to a marketeer. They
would probably say, "Whoa, that's cool!"

It could be useful as in MDT ground shadow - show the shadow of the image @
diff. locations of the sun

Oh come on its as useful as weldments - LOL. I actually know why shadows was included and it turns out to be a very logical reason I would have never in a million years guessed. I don't think I can share though 😞

To me it is totally useless, but it does look cool. Makes me wonder how
they can do it.
How can it calculate the changing shadow so quickly when the part is being
rotated?

Just wondering why don't they spend more time to fix problems in .idw file
instead of developing some fancy stuff but useless

My guess would be because SolidWorks has it.

Think about it in terms of a shop process. Drawing issues are a lathe, graphics is a mill. Some parts just can't effectivly be made on a lathe......

I went to a SolidWorks 2004 demo recently where they showed off cosmetic bitmap representation of threads. The crowd oh and ahed, but the presenter commented that he thought it was totally useless, and probably ony added because Inventor had it, but it looks kool.

Doesn't matter what the product is, and most people probably won't admit it, but kool sells seats.
Only after your committed do you find the limitations.

One of the purposes for ground shadow is to be able to see both a wireframe and a shaded
view at the same time. It is basically like a Xray view. I do remember hearing a use
for the "Xray" view but it eludes me now.

You can move parts and they show up real-time in the xray.

I was once told it was so you could "see interferences". I told them that's
what the interference tool and the assembly section tools were for. They
stopped talking at that point

But almost anything can be made with a hammer, anvil, forge, file and
scraper. Of course you need experience and time, lots of time.

If you look at graphics featuring objects on a flat background you will
often see fake shadows added. It kind of acts like an anchor to your eye and
helps with the illusion of perspective. Those of us who look at 3D
representations every day probably loose the need to "believe" that what we
are looking at is solid.

Next time I'll talk about how socks leave our dimension through the dryer,
and come back as wire hangers.... 😉

The discussion of socks, and earth shape and Simpson's while interesting has little to do
with Inventor and has been dumped into the dryer to be lost with the rest of the socks.
