emboss iproperty

I want to emboss an iproperty on a part, but access to the properties is disabled when placing text in a model sketch. I'd prefer to have the property linked to the feature. Is there a workaround for this?

Why is the access to model properties disabled when placing text in a part?

This is a limitation currently in Inventor. I will forward it to product
design.
Thanks!

This has been a request for some tome now. This would have cut a 3-1/2 week project down to about 4 days. and that's just one project. Someone at autodesk said they need numbers so there you are. Thanks for forwarding it along!!!

Sure you can. I've been doing it for years. I'ts been available as long as
we have had the emboss command.

Very handy when making spacers or shims for machine adjustment.

Here's a 2008 Custom iPart for that purpose. In Parameters check the value
you want to export. In the text for emboss bring in the parameter.

Make the part

Sorry, the model was flawed. I had selected the wrong parameter. Here is the
updated part.

The guys asks if he can emboss an iPROPERTY and you are talking about
PARAMETERS??? They are not the same...

Try to emboss the PARTNUMBER...

Did your example just happen to be an ipart or does using iparts give some extra ability in this area?

Also, Teun is right. I'm trying to emboss the stock number.

I can understand not allowing access to mass and volume. Embossing one of them would create an infinite loop. But I don't get it for the other iproperties.

If there is some significant reason, then it would be nice if Autodesk would allow parameters with string values. Then I could fill in the iproperty with the parameter.

I was responding to the portion of the OP: "I'd prefer to have the property
linked to the feature."

I do not look at iProperties as features. To me a feature is part of the
physical part. Yes, it would be nice to have the full range of iProperties
available. This is on the wishlist. We'll have to wait to see if it
magically appears soon.

If the part number is numeric and unitless, then it can be added to the User
Parameters and driven to the iProperties AND the text from there.

Yes, I do know the difference.... 🙂

"To me a feature is part of the physical part."

Are you feeling OK? I want the number displayed via the emboss feature (included in the physical part) to be linked to an iproperty.

We also have the need for letters as well as numbers (something like a small battery callout) that calls out the orrifce size of our nozzles.

Yes, I'm feeling great.... 🙂

240-05614 is a text string, not numeric. The hyphen makes the string text.

If my feeble mind remembers correctly, you asked for a workaround.....

Here's the workaround.

Examine the parameters, and change the user parameter numeric value in this
part to whatever you what it to be.... then

1. Update the part.
2. Examine the Part Number iProperty and also the value of the custom
property

Just make your changes to the User defined parameter and the others will
update properly. You will need to dump the hyphen.

You can set this up in your template as well.

Maybe we will see a change in the next version...

No, because then your PartNumber would also include "mm" or "ul", as we
can't strip the units from the string...
