cannot create contour roll on sheet metal

I am getting an error message (see attached) when trying to create a contour roll using sheet metal, I have tried editing the sketch to open loop however I cannot get the contour roll to preview on the part.

The part is a short length of square hollow section from which I am trying to apply the roll to, there seems to be a problem in projecting the geometry on the end of the part, can anyone help with this ? Thanks

Hi, the part is one of the data tutorial parts located in the sheet metal parts, please find attached part taken from this directory. Thank you

You must have missed a step - I don't see an unconsumed sketch or a shared sketch to use to create the feature?

Thank you for the replies, the problem I seem to be having is with the projection of the edge lines at the ends of the part for preparing the edges for the next contour roll - the problem seems to be when I select face for new sketch then project geometry of the edges I get the error message

The default for Inventor is to Autoproject Edges on sketch create.

This would cause problems with this tutorial.

You want only the outside edges as shown in the image.

So if Autoproject projected them all - you need to delete all but those shown.

Also, if you are projecting the geometry (not autoproject) be sure to select only the edges and not the face of the part.

Selecting the face would project all edges - even the ones you don't want.

Attach YOUR file with the edges YOU projected here.

After you create a 2D Sketch in the face, you must delete the interior lines, only just the exterior lines. Otherwise you will not create the contour roll with success.

Yes....like JDMather says.

...alternatively - you could right click on Sketch1 in the browser and select Share Sketch.

Then Edit Sketch and add the bend line.  This isn't how the tutorial instructs, but it is more effiecient in my opinion.

Thank you I now understand, I was trying to contour roll with the interior lines projected, having de-selected the lines this works fine now. Thanks too for tip to share sketch as an alternative method which I will try. Smiley Happy
