Dell Dimension 8200 P-4 @1.7GHz
2GB of Ram
64MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce3 4X AGP w/DVI

I was looking at getting the 256MB Nvidia FX 5600, do I need to upgrade or is the 64MB fine.

Softquadro that Geforce3 to a QuadroDDC before
spending any money on a new one. Should be
acceptable.

Here are some number for you to look
over.

The FX5600 is a "Price/Performance GeForceFX
Release" it has faster clock speeds than the geforce3 and has DX9 support (IV is
OpenGL so DX9 means nothing), but it only has 1 texture unit.  The Geforce
3 can be fully converted to a quadro this may be of more value than the extra
clock speed. Its hard to say what would be better.

What exact Geforce3 do you have?

If you bought the latest and greatest 3.06 GHZ 800 fsb computer it would be almost twice as fast as your current computer BUT...... most users actually only spend 20% or less of their time waiting on the actual computer. yeah it would be faster, yeah the ROI would probably support buying a new computer every year but it can still be a hard sale.

I,m trying to avoid putting the cart before the horse, I maxed out my Ram and if I can go from 64MB graphics to 256MB for $130 I just want to make sure my system will still run ok

i wouldnt do a fx 5600. its slower than the geforce4 4200's and even slower
than the gf4mx's in some tests.

its a budget card that supports dx9, but that means nothing to inventor. you
would better off getting 126meg geforce4 4200 or 4800 (same card, 8x agp)

I guess thats the same thing I was trying to say (In a round about kind of
way), the 5600 is not that much faster than a geforce3, and being able to
fully convert to a quadro, may of more benifit than the few extra Mhz.
