[Wishlist] Copy constraints when copying components

Here is another item of my personal wishlist:

When copying a bunch of components within an assembly that have a
couple constraints between them IV should copy the constraints as
well.

Example: When I have a component that is used several times in a
machine that component usually is bolted on to the machine. When I
copy the component and its fasteners to a new location it would be
very convenient when the fasteners would keep their constraints.

Also even if there are no constraints it would be nice if the copied
parts would have the same orientation as the original parts.

Matthias,

The Copy Components command should give you the results you are looking for.

Rich,

I just tried that and it seems to make an actual copy of the files and make new files.

I believe what is being asked is to select RMB copy and paste a group of associated parts in an assembly and have the constraints that are inherent between those part stay. Of course you would lose any constraints from any of the parts to other parts not within the selection set but all constraints that are between the copied parts themselves should stay.

If there a workflow using the Copy Components command that accomplishes this, could you briefly describe it?

Unless I am misunderstanding (which is more than possible), the copy
components command does not address this issue.
I often work like this:-
1. I open a new assembly, place a few parts.
2. I open an existing assembly.
3. I copy some parts from the existing assembly to the new assembly. (any
constraints on the copied parts are lost).
4. I re-constrain copied parts.(this is the problem I think Mathias has and
one I also would like to be "remedied")

Copy Components can make new files as well as keeping exisiting files without losing constraints.

When selecting the parts your components they will be listed with a blue circle with double x (copy as) select to turn it into a yellow circle with an + (use existing).

Thank you orchdes,

Do not use that command a lot and never to copy existing parts. I was just being to lazy to look up what the circles meant. In IV9 SP2 they do not show a tooltip, would be nice if they did.

In addition to the circles if you forget to change them.
When the file names dialog appears if you remove the _cpy from the file name the status will change to "Reuse Existing"
