I have a model and a drawing of a Sheet Metal part that were previously created. I now need to make updates to the part. When I make the necessary cuts on the model the flat patern view on the drawing rotates 90°. Can anyone tell me why this is happening and what I can do to prevent it. I know how to rotate the view back to the original position however in doing so some of the dimensions get messed up. This is frustrating when I am trying to make a quick simple change and end up spending time checking and fixing existing dimensions.
For avoiding the undesired rotation, just after creating the view, select it, right-click, Rotate and define, for instance a Vertical (or Horizontal) Edge, as in the image below.
Once you do this, the view cannot rotate, even if you edit the model afterwards.
I hope it can be useful.
Kind regards,
Alessandro
Thank you for your help Alessandro. I am woking on Inventor 2010 sp3. When I right click I have the option to rotate but not to rotate and define. Is there a way to define a veiw in my version?
Thanks again,
Melissa
You can fix this by editing your flat pattern definition. Instructions are with 2010 and may differ slightly for 2011/2012.
This should correct the flat pattern orientation in your drawing. If my instructions are unclear I can post a video.
Hi meltidwell,
You might investigate the flat pattern edit options as mentioned here:

I'm not sure why your flat patterns would be flipping on you during an edit, but it might be related to the default flat pattern oreintation setting.
I hope that helps.
Best of luck to you with all of your Inventor pursuits.

Edit: it looks like alewer had the same thought, only quicker.
Hello Melissa,
This works in Inventor 2010 as well, even if the Rotate dialog has less options.
Create the view of your flat pattern.
With the Rotate command, define, for instance an edge that is already vertical, as Vertical.
If needed, use the Clockwise and Counter clockwise buttons to set the view in the desired position.
After you do that, the view cannot rotate whatever change you do in the model.
I hope it helps.
Kind regards,
Alessandro
