I’m trying to twist a flat part, any ideas how I would go about doing it?
I have modelled the part in its flat state and need to twist it around an axis; please find attached a picture of what I’m trying to model and an ipt file. The sizes and holes have been changed for IP reasons.
Any ideas or help is appricated
Helical surface created with Coil feature.
Trim the surface.
Thicken.
Will not exactly true (on cut edges) to the the distortion due to bending.
Thanks for the reply,
This way of modelling the part had crossed my mind, but how do I then go about adding hole detail so there in the correct orientation?
That’s why I thought it was better to start with the flat part and somehow bend it if possible in inventor?
Any thoughts
Here is an example - I didn't have time to figure out a more elegant technique.
The Thicken of a surface does add some distortion to the holes, but not 100% true to real world result.
See the attached, I've just use small sizes for it, It was also created in IV 2012 but it'll open in any newer versions with a warning just accept the changes from older to newer version. hope it of some help.
Sorry about that. I don't know what's going on but either Autodesk System or IE 10 is striping the file off, it's happen a few time recently, so I've used GOOGLE CHROME this time Here it is I hope.
Are the hole parallel to the face, only it's abit difficult to tell or see any ont the example that was posted?
With the holes paralle to the face, the work plain is obtained by picking the three point shown
Thanks for the help guys I've modeled it using the ideas from both your models
Thanks for the assistance and effort
Pleased you found the post of us both helpful, and came up with a solution.
I would, and I think JD might be as well, interested to see how you resolved this, it's amassing how many right answers that can be, using different methods, to solve a problem like this.
I though there may be some problems with attached files, as on several occasions some of my files have been stripped I though that I forgot to attach or that they may have been suspect in some way by the Autodesk system, I do know that posting more than one file is virtually impossible with the carp know as IE10 that why I now use Google if I'm posting /attaching files to this site and group
I found the best way to model a part like this is to coil a surface into the appropriate shape.
Project the holes from a flat development sketch on an offset plane above and trim down.
This gives the holes in the right orientation on the coiled surface.
Thicken the part and you have an accurately modelled part.
