The little things

This is one that I've grumbled to myself about for some time now but keep
forgetting to see if it annoys everyone else.

When selecting a part/assy/presentation to insert into an IDW why do we not
have a "All Inventor files" option in the file selection dialogue. Many
times I've navigated to the correct folder not to find the part I want.
Then (sometimes after checking that it is indeed in the folder via Explorer)
I go back to the dialogue to notice it's set to IAM files...

If we could list the all then we could filter them later if necessary...

Just me?

I agree. I've grumbled about the same thing. First choice should show all
file types to choose from.

I agree. If I want to see everything in the directory I've just gotten used to typing in *.* to see everything. I deem an "All Files" option a necessity in this dialog box.

Agreed. ALL files should be the default
MO.

Just and addition to this:
Why not have some huge buttons along the upper or lower rim of the file-open
dialogbox, with similar icons like new part file / new assy file / new idw
to get the filter set to the appropriate filetype?
I see myself reading the entries in this tiny dropdown and scrolling down to
other entries, again and again, all day long....

And, please, make that dialogbox HUGE, minimum 21" wide, full screen! My
recent project has 600 parts, means about 1500 files altogether! The
scrollwheel is already worn out !

I like your part type idea as icons on the main window. Another trick. In the Open dialog box highlight the first file and then start typing in the file name you're looking for and the dialog box will scroll itself to find your file. For example say you're looking for a file named 976-8.ipt in a directory full of files (including other dash numbers of the same file). In the open dialog box start typing in 9 (jumps to files starting with "9"), 7 (jumps to files with "97"), and continue typing in as much as you need to jump to that area of files in the directory. Works great if you know part of a file name but not the whole name. This also works in Windows Explorer and most other file dialog boxes. I hope this eases your scroll wheel finger a little.

i have done the same thing with out picking the first file. if you just start typing in the file dialog box it jumps as you described. I find this better because there is no accidental picking of an unwanted file or if you do not type fast enough it tends to "forget" what you were intending to do. example 976-8.ipt you type 9 the phone rings you answer then type 76-8. It forgets that you typed the 9 and jumps you back to file 76-8 not the intended 976-8. The dialog box will sit there all day waiting for your next input. Also if you type "o" you can edit it without redoing the search.

You're right, in IV you don't have to highlight the first file but in some applications (like Autocad) you do. You're also right about the delay. The entry has to be a continuous entry because after about a 1 second of no entry the search string starts over. Can you explain the "o" key and what it does? I'm too dense to understand.

Mechman,

I'm quite new to Win2k, so I didn't really get used
to this until now, but will keep trying. It was not there in WinNT.

Yes - and/or make it resizable like every other program I use
