Suggestion, kind of funny...

Ok so let's say a friend of mine....made some mating parts with a mating hole pattern. My um friend...made the hole spacing pattern by the distance divided by number of holes, which is a very nice feature by the way...except for in this case, the number of holes didn't divide evenly into the distance, so the resultant dimension between holes was a repeating decimal....ok so this didn't hurt anything except for some model assembly confusion and some friendly ribbing. My, uh, friend has learned his lesson there....lol

So, the suggestion would be for the dialog box to alert you with something saying similar to, "do you really want to use this spacing which will result in non-terminating decimal spacing dumbass?"

:-P

make a wav file recording, something like "thats a sh*t constraint" and name it connect.

when your friend goes for a coffee or smoke, jump on his machine and go to somewhere like

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 11\Bin

and paste your wav file in, overwriting the original. then turn on constraint audio notification in aplication options...

sit back and watch next time hes working in an assembly...
lots of fun to be had :0P

Tell your "friend" not to worry about it so much. That's what "significant
digits" and "tolerance" are for. 🙂

Did he try selecting curve length instead of distance?

ok, so the people who are probably too smart for their own good believed me that it was my friend 😉

Anyway, the problem came up when someone else modeled a mating part to the hole pattern as dimensioned, not as modeled, so each hole spacing was off by .000x, so he couldn't mate it properly.

Like I said, not the end of the world, but definitely embarassing, especially since I'm a temp/new guy.

Did you understand what Dennis said?

Curve Length in the feature pattern.

A line can be used as the "path" of a pattern and simultaneously be used to
measure the length of the path which then IV will automatically space the
holes... of course, if your "friend" doesn't dim the line to the "as
modelled" component's dims then there's not much to do but sit there and
take it.

Bugging the "new guy" is a specialty of mine.

LOL! just the other day a young student mechanic ripped into a motor on an
ag tractor -it overheated and spun 3 mains which then plugged the galleries
to the throws and then spun the rod bearings... scored a couple liners too-
and he wanted to pull the liners so I built an adapter plate for the sleeve
puller for him.

I didn't tell him that he needed to drain the coolant in the block (he
didn't ask!) so as he was under the tractor holding the sleeve puller in
place he was lucky enough to experience what it is like to shower in
anti-freeze! LOL!

It could be worse.... you could be soaked in ethylene glycol with oil
dripping on you.

If you happen to have your mouth open when that happens at least it leaves a
good taste!
