Radeon 9600 Pro

Advance Techonology (in Netherlands) offers a new
laptop 3,2 GHz (800MHz FSB), 512 Cache, 4Gb 400 MHz DDR, and ATI Radeon
9600 pro (128 Mb SGRAM).

Specs seems to be ok, but I'm not sure about the
ATI card. I'm wondering whether anyone is using this specific card and what
about frame rates compared to the nVidia cards.

Frame rates are excellent but in my experience with the 9700 Pro, it is not stable with IV. And it did not display some of the texts and lines very clearly. Now that was several months ago so maybe their drivers have improved.

I sold a perfectly good 9700 Pro for peanuts so that I could use Inventor w/o any problems. I just have a GeForce 2MX now. Works ok (not fantastic) for me.

You will probably find that this laptop is manufactured by
Clevo (www.clevo.com.tw) in Taiwan.
They manufacture and sell to different companies which rebrand them like Sager
(www.discountlaptops.com) and
Eurocom (www.eurocom.com).  I have a
similar machine from Eurocom, which was at the time the fastest, the P4 3.06
Hyperthreading with the 9000 Radeon.

My advice is: Stay away from ATI.  Take the money and buy
a Dell.  Maybe not quite as fast, but far more refined and
stable.

Ok they look very similar to the ones you mention. (www.laptops.nl) I'm wondering : Is DELL the only one configuring laptops with nvidia cards ?

That computer look really good, is there a way to view in English, I can't seem to find the Configure button. I have two friends how have Alienware laptops that are running that Radeon 9000 card, and they have not had any problems at all.

Aha, a little investigation (after reading Nick
Ruberg's post) the VX8900 I mentioned is identical at Eurocom D800P and Sager
NP8890 by discountlaptops (
href="http://www.discountlaptops.com/index.php?section=specs&model_id=783&category_id=34&category_t...
)
All have ATI Radeon 9600 cards.

Is anyone running inventor 7 (large assy's) on one
of these machines? What precise configuration?

ATI does not consider the 9600 a CAD card and does
not support the drivers for CAD applications. Vendors do not supply non CAD
notebooks for testing, so Inventor uses the card in it's fall back mode for ATI.
Don't expect any improvement.

Take a look at:
http://www.autodesk.com/us/inventor/graphic_cards/ for cards supported in
laptops.

For your info (two messages up), Clevo are also the suppliers
of Alienware (Alienware simply spray the cases a funky colour).  I was
under the impression that Alienware were coming out with a laptop with an nVidia
card.

I run a Eurocom 888ES (16.1" screen, ATI 9000 128MB, 1Gb RAM,
60 Gb 7200 rpm disc, Win XP Pro, P4 3.06 with Hyperthreading).   It
works OK.  The VGA Card is a bit slow and there seems to be a barely
audible buzzing noise when I load the card (i.e. when moving assemblies or
playing high end games).  Usually when I switch on and the first idw I open
in Inventor has no dimensions.  I load another file (any ipt) and close it
again and the dimensions are there.  It is this sort of thing which I find
a little annoying.  Also, because it has a desktop processor, battery life
is 1.5 hours maximum.

My personal advice, don't look at anything with an ATI card
for Inventor,  even if it is an ATI 5600000000 card (to be launched in
about 20 years).  You will find that the lower end nVIdia card beat the
high end ATI cards on CAD.  If my laptop was to mysteriously disapper into
thin air, I would go for an M60 next.

Can you please possibly find out what drivers they are
using?  version, etc. and where they could be downloaded from?

Yesterday I downloaded the latest drivers for the T40P IBM and they are
giving me the same problems, it is falling our of hardware acceleration
mode in seconds. Still working on it though because we have a bunch of
them and need to get it working.

Charles, this may be a stupid question, but how do you know if it is falling
out of hardware acceleration? Does it simply become dog slow?

Willy,  I will be exchanging my Eurocom 888ES for one of
those 888P's (the thing with the 800 bus and the 9600 card) next week.  the
vendor has decided to do that due to my incessant whine about the buzzing noise
from the VGA card.  If you want I can keep you posted.

Yes, I am still interested. Inform me please about
specs and your number of parts in assy's, graphic performance and so
on.  BTW I asked my vendor to substitute the 9600 card by a M9 Fire GL
(supported by Autodesk). There reaction : NO.
