Questions about the idw-to-pdf programs

My company is currently looking to the possiblity of using pdf's instead of
scanned drawings (its a long story). My questions is: if I have a pdf, can I
convert ot back to a idw or dwg? Better yet, can I open the pdf in IV or
AutoCAD and modify it?

Thanks,
Gary Marzetti

P.S. We recently started using the xgl viewer/packager with all of our
suppliers. They love it.

Never mind - I answered my own question already. Save the idw and print to
pdf. NO PAPER.

Thanks,

The pdf format cannot go back to an idw or dwg. You could only modify it
with a package like Adobe Acrobat. The editing functions are somewhat
limited and definitely not like a CAD package. When you make a pdf output
from an idw, you need to think of it as an archive or stake-in-the ground.
You make your changes in the idw and print to pdf again for the new file.
There is no need to go back because your true original is still the idw.

A few messy workarounds.. (I would want to do this too often)..I found on
google (written by Dean Saadallah)

----------------------------------------

PDF to DWG:
PDF -> Adobe Illustrator -> DWG/DXF -> AutoCAD
PDF -> GhostScript + GSView + PStoEdit -> DXF -> AutoCAD
PDF -> Adobe Acrobat (free or full version) -> Copy/Paste -> AutoCAD

Open Adobe Illustrator version 10 (if you have it, if not, might
want to consider buying it), open the PDF, then Export to DXF format.
In AutoCAD, open the DXF file and save to DWG.

Get the freebie tools GhostScript + GSView + PStoEdit from the
Internet (any search engine will help you find them all), install
them all in the order noted above, download the quirky help files
that go with them, then open the PDF file in GSVIEW, then you use
the Edit>Convert to vector format... and pick the DXF option.
In AutoCAD, open the DXF file and save to DWG.
The result is not 'pretty' or convenient though.

Adobe Acrobat, use the Graphics Select Tool, select the graphic(s)
you want to bring in, right-click and select Copy, then in AutoCAD
right click and select Paste: now you have an OLE image of the graphic to
use in AutoCAD.
If you use the Text Select Tool in Acrobat, use PASTESPEC in AutoCAD
to bring it in as an MTEXT block: current text style settings apply.
This assumes the text in your PDF is text, and was not saved as graphics.
