I don't see a closed profile that Inventor needs to create your Break-Out. Inventor is looking for a closed circle or rectangle or other closed shape that you have created in your sketch to use to "cut" into your part to create the Break-Out.

Select your view

Create the sketch within the selected view

The sketch must be a closed profile

Exit the sketch

Select the Break-Out view command

Select the sketch shape

Hi

You mentioned that you had the same problem after creating a sketch.

Added to Blair, the emphasis is on "Create the sketch within the selected view" Can you project geometry? if not then the sketch is not on the selected view.

A tip that I have my students do is always click the view to see the viewport boundary highlight, then don't move the mouse.  Hit s on the keyboard to start the sketch for the boundary rather than moving the mouse to the Sketch icon.

Create the boundary and exit sketch.
Now click the Break-out View icon.

I found that beginners were somehow losing focus on the view when moving the mouse to the Sketch icon and then creating the sketch at the sheet level rather than the view level.

Try this tip and report back.
