Problem 2: Long plots on HP Designjet 650C

I thought this would not be a problem since I regularly plot drawings upto
150" long from AutoCAD, but now I am finding that my Windows driver
being used by Inventor apparently will only allow me to plot upto a length
of around 108-109", even though the help for the driver talks of lengths
upto 500" allowed, but you have to somehow use Smartzoom in the
driver setup. However, without giving any specific examples, everything
I try using this Smartzoom I still get messages saying the paer size is
not supported.

Driver: HP Designjet 650C (C2859B) by HP, v4.40.03 on WinXP

TIA,
Bob

how much RAM have you got in the plotter. my ENCAD Cadjet2 came with 2MB and I upped it to 20MB which works fine. the IV windows system printer might be plotting in raster format(I might be wrong) which uses much more memory than the Autocad heidi vector plot drivers.

HP support forum and docs is saying now that 109"
is the max length for

650c's using their drivers and that AutoCAD somehow
cheats to overcome

this barrier. Wish they would have migrated that to
Inventor. HP also is

trying to say the limitation is due to the OS
limitations, but I tried pointing

out to them that their other plotters seem to
support lengths upto 600"!

Still waiting to hear back from them on that
point.

I am thinking of trying the 450c driver instead as
it seems to support longer

lengths than 109", but I will have to test it's
compatibility to the 650c.

P.S. Any programmers out there itching to do
something, how about a save as

hpgl addon?

There currently are some windows printer drivers out there, but I have never found a
freeware one

http://www.winline.com/whywin.html

I bet with some searching you could also find a DXF to HPGL translator.

looking at windows help. there is a 4 billion pixel limit on plotting which restrict you to 110 inches long.(according to my plotter's manual) in autocad I could plot 11m long(400 inches) using heidi vector drivers.

following from winxp help...
CAUSE
This problem may occur if the maximum size of a device surface was set at 4 billion pixels. Because of a limitation in Windows XP and Windows 2000, attempts to create a device surface that is larger than 4 billion pixels do not work.

this has been fixed in w2k sp4 or xp sp1.

looking at the iv manuals there is absolutely nothing on plotting.

just tried setting up a custom sheet size from iv print dialog box and the max it allows is 400 inches or 10150mm on Encad cadjet2. this is with latest windows updates and service packs. have not tried plotting anything yet. (I think the encad is fairly close to a hp)

If I could just get 150", I woould be happy. What
gets me is that I can setup a HP Designjet 450C

driver and get this length, but I cannot get the
same length on the 650C. HP Support was been

totally useless, sticking with the "Blame it on the
OS (but different devices have different limitations

fallacy)". I plan on attempting to send a plot to
the 650c through the 450C drivers just to see

if it will work. I have resorted to similar fixes
in the past such as using a LaserJet 4L driver to

print to a Laserjet 6L with some success. The trick
is usually to use a driver for an older model

so you don't have to worry about new features not
being handled correctly. Maybe I will also try

the encad drivers if the 450c drivers to not
work.

What still urkes me though is that if they could
just stick with a strictly vector based format like hpgl/2,

there should be no "pixel limitations" like you
wrote previously.

Thanx,

Bob

My WinXP at work has SP1 loaded, so this cannot be
the cause of the problem.
