ProE Crash when importing large STEP file from Inventor 6

We have a customer that is having problems when importing a STEP file that was generated from Inventor 6. The file is an assembly of about 500 parts (109MB). The customer is using ProE 2001 on a Compaq AP550 Workstation, 733Mhz P3, 1GB Ram.

When trying to open the STEP file the system runs for about an hour or two then crashes. It works with smaller size file (under 15MB).

Anybody have any suggestions.

Best deal is probably to break the assembly into subs and export seperately.
IV will crash when trying to save all the files after gobbling up a huge step
file, too. (Seems to be an operating system thing.)
