Please define an "open window" (system performance question)

They say there's no such thing as a stupid question, so here I go...

Often on this board people talk about the performance of Windows, Inventor,
and video cards with "x number of windows open". Example, "My system works
fine until I have 14 windows open, then it chokes".
Please define an "open window" (especially as it relates to Inventor).

Thanks for bearing with me,
Brad

The number of open graphics windows as seen by the Window pulldown menu. This is common to all windows programs with an MDI (multiple document interface). So for an example you can open any file, then hit window, new window 9 times and you will have 10 windows open.
