Pauses when zooming in and out: LOD Issue?

Hi all, I'm still with IV5.3 and I wanted to know if IV7 still has this
problem, or just if anyone else has seen it. My issue is difficult
because I can't reproduce it by just opening Inventor and zooming around
assemblies, but only after working on parts for a while. Inventor gets
into this mode where whenever you try to zoom in or out beyond a certain
threshold, there is a long pause of 2-3 seconds. This happens when I'm
looking at a part up-close, or if I'm zooming very far out. In either
case, there is a zoom level that causes a pause every time it is crossed.

At first I thought it was my computer, a 1Ghz Athlon with 768 MB of ram
and a Geforce2MX. But now I have a 2.4 Ghz P4 with a gig of ram and a
Geforce 4 Ti 4200 with 128 megs of ram, and I still have the same
problem. Could it be AGP swapping or video memory? I suspect that it
could be Inventor changing the model detail depending on the view
distance (LOD, level of detail changing is something I've read about).

your video card is still pretty much a gaming card. people seem to like, and have no problems with, the xgl series. also, you might wanna try to cut down on your display quality. -Joe

Can't put my finger on it, but it's to do with using your wheel mouse. Using zoom window/zoom all or a Spacemouse/ball doesn't
exhibit this problem.

I see it with Gloria 2/3, Quadro 4 380/580/980 with all drivers. One of those things I guess.

Yes, this is true. I was conerned about the fact that an upgrade from a
Geforce2 to a 4 didn't seem to help the problem, but you're absolutely
right that it may still be a video card issue.

Wow, that's pretty interesting, but it's a shame that you still see this
problem with high-end cards... it's frustrating when you're in the heat
of building something or trying to show something to the boss and your
system hangs.

I'll try not using my mouse wheel next time it happens.

You might try the softQuadro and see what happens.

Thats only on big models mind. Small stuff (up to 500 parts) I very rarely see it with a Q4 card - persuade your boss to buy you
a spaceball

I still get the pause zoom effect with a Qudro card; but only when using the
mouse wheel.
I since the wheel motion is almost more of a segmented "ratchet" motion, I
think the comp interprets each "click" of the wheel as a command.
So instead of using the zoom command-where the computer gets one command to
zoom and then it regens the image;
the computer is getting a command to zoom>then regen> but before it finishes
regening you spin the wheel to make it zoom again.
I think it just gets bogged down with a bunch of zoom commands while it is
trying to regen the image.

The pregnant pause. If you go to the original Inventor support group
(autodesk.inventor.support) and get the headers past 3-13-02, you'll find a
post by me on that date called "Dr. Descus make a house call". A few folks
had various suggestions, most of which were helpful, although the problem
never quite went away.

R7 does not seem to be doing this to me.

I wonder, would a USB versus PS/2 mouse connection make a difference in response?
