Patterning features at a set of points

I have a set of xyz triplets (in an Excel file) and I'd like to create an Inventor part (or assembly if necessary) with a simple feature (a sphere) located at each point. The closest I was able to get was to import the points into a 3D sketch with the 'lines between points' option selected, create my sphere at one end of the resulting path, and then do a rectangular patten following the path of that sphere. That's close, but the problem is that the points are not evenly spaced along the path, so some of the spheres end up at the midpoints of the path segments instead of at the corners. Putting a workplane at each point and manually creating a bunch of copies of the same feature is possible, but the source data set is large enough that I'm hoping there's a clever automated way of doing the same thing...
