Pack and Dispose

I've recently been involved with the design and development of a radical new
piece of plant - radical to our industry. After all the alterations I realised
that there were several parts that were no longer in the final assembly. I'd
left them within my directory structure whilst the development process was
underway.

Is the anyway of sorting-out and relocating these parts (Pack and Dispose -
preferable compacted). I don't fancy using P&G to make copies of all parts
related to the final assembly and then destroying the originals. It would be
useful if these unused parts could be put into a separated folder, I might need
then if the project development continues.

I can't think of any way to automate this task. Best I can think of is to P&G your top level file into a new directory. Then open the old and new directory folders in side-by-side windows and go down the list and remove anything from the old directory that doesn't exist in the new directory. When done you can discard the directory that contains the P&G'd files. I had to do this on a ProE project to make sure I only got the active drawing files copied to a CD.

Not the answer you are looking for I know.

I don't assign drawing numbers until the design is finalized, just simple
descriptions. When the design is final, but before detailing, I use DA to
assign part numbers and change the filenames to match these part numbers.
Then I just delete or move anything without a part number series assigned.

One possible solution: Create the requisite Workgroup in your project
then switch your project to "Semi-Isoloated". Check in all the parts in
your assembly and Inventor will "move" them into your Workgroup
directory. What is left in your Workspace is left over, dispose of as
you desire.
