Order in assembly

Hi
In the browser I try to drag a component to change the order in the assembly
hierarchy, but it does not work!

Why?

On 5.3 release we could do this operation.

Thanks.

This ability has been turned off in R6 due to the addition of assy features. I don't know if SP1 addresses this or not but I do know that Adesk is trying to work it out so we have this ability again.

SP1 does not appear to address this.  I think
this was more of a R7 goal (along with additional functionality) from what
I understood...

This was not addressed in SP1 because it is not a
"bug".

As has already been discussed, the reasons I
disabled this workaround to the "organization" problem may not be valid and
simply adding it back may be the easiest thing to do in the short-term.
Longer-range ideas for addressing organization within an assembly are also being
considered.

Gary I think Mech (and I know I) knew it was not a
bug.  We were part of the discussion before.  Sorry if we made it
sound that way...

Yes Gary, not trying to increase the "bug" count on you or anything. That's why I tried to mention that it was "turned off" instead of using the "b**" word.

I do appreciate you letting us know ahead of time that SP1 does not turn it back on.

Is it possible to make the part list order in drawings follow the order in the assembly browser? Also I would like to have complete control over the order of components. As it works now, sub assemblies always "float" to the top of the order. I'm trying to keep my drawing balloons in sync with an external data base and this behavior makes it almost impossible. Thanks.

I realize that the ability to drag things up and
down, while adding nothing as far as "design intent" to the model, did provide a
bit of organizational order to assemblies - via the browser view. My hope was
that we'd get generic folder capabilities to satisfy the
organizational need and my concern was that if we moved to a sequence
dependent browser view in assemblies like we have in part, then a part's
location in the browser could/would impact its interaction with assembly
features before/after. I was also thinking about including an "end of
assembly" node that behaved like the "end of part" node.

Given how we have segregated assembly features - my
reasons for disabling the up/down dragging seem to be invalid and painful in
light of not getting the generic folder organization "tool".

I understand your concern about making the assy browser sequence dependent. That does add a new issue to the mix. My &.02 worth is that ProE's assy environment is very sequence dependent and I hate it with a passion so please be careful as you go forward with your design. Having organizational/generic "folders" sounds cool. I'm all for the "End of Assembly" node. ProE also has that and I like it. While on the subject of "End of..." nodes, how about adding a drop down menu to it with a command that automatically sends the node to the bottom of the browser list so we don't have to do a long drag operation on complicated models?

Gary,

Will it be possible to control the order of the
items in the parts list by organizing them in the assembly browser in a future
version of Inventor?  Is this something that is being planned?

There is recognition of a need for better control
of parts list sequences, balloon numbers and model space organization tools. How
we will address this is being evaluated.
