O.K.. I'm ready to go.. answer this for me

Ok.. lets say i want to make a rocker arm. I, draw it all up on inventor... can this thing make my g codes for me.. does it help with my tooling.. will it make my milling programs for me... HOW THE HECK DO I INTERGRATE IT TO MY MILLING MACHINE...does it work with a cam system... The deal is here at work.. they want some of us to take the class, and I'm wondering how the heck its gonna help me make the part..

I think it would depend on what formats your Cam program can read. If it can read a file
format that Inventor can output then yes it is going to help you make parts. 8^)

Inventor is used to design parts, not manufacture
parts. You will still need a milling package such as SmartCAM or MasterCAM to
generate your tooling paths and G codes. As for how these packages use the data
from Inventor, each has its own abilities. Some may be able to read the Inventor
file directly, some will have you export the Inventor file as an IGES or STEP
file.

One of our machine shop vendors can read in STEP files directly into their
CNC. I usually don't even need to send him a print.

I send very complex parts to cnc shops a sat files. They use the files to
develop their tool paths. (I am not sure how)

What do you do about tolerances if they don't have a print to look at?

That's why I said usually. For a lot of plate and rod type parts they know
what our default tolerance are...

This is highly dependant on the type of tolerances you need. With modern manufacturing techniques we can get away with murder here by having some generic tolerances that are applied to our parts. If most things are +/- .010 for example, who needs a tolerance on a machined part. Sheet metal tolerances are mostly dicated by the process, you need to design around the process so as long as everyone agrees what the process tolerances are who needs a print. Exceptions always exist of course so it isn't as easy as I am making it sound. You still need a print for thread callouts, matrial/finish, specific tolerances that may need post machining, or sometimes the end result is affected by the order of you bends and the manufacturer needs to know that. So I am saying is that with specific parts toleranced dimensions aren't really necessary.

The Sheetmetal shop I deal with has told me a few times that all I need to do on the
drawing is put a few dims on any key features and the overall dims. Our tolerances are
pretty standard and it is not very common for us to deviate from them.

If I have time I still do all the dims though, just doesn't feel right not to

LOL, yeah I know how you feel. I've always had the mindset that tolerances dictate the process.

But that just doesn't cut it these days. We have notes on all our drawings that state that the 3D model is the controlling document. It then states what the assumed tolerances are. We then give overall ref dims, and explicitly tolerance any dimension that is different than the generic tolerances, or just something that needs to be monitored for conformance. Our drawings are pretty lean. We send our suppliers a 3D model and a PDF to get the parts built.

We do large mold dies 3" x 50" x 110", EdgeCam works great for me.

I have used EdgeCam with Inventor since R3.

I design the dies, make the prints, and produce the Gcode. I my code is to the exact size of the die for the particular tool.

It is the "real world" that needs the tolerance.

I put all of the tolerence "stuff" on the prints because the operators, still needs to know Design Intent and what he can get away with.

Hi,

I have tried Hypermill from Open Mind which is
integrated in IV and create G code with appropriate post porcessor
