No Thumbnail Preview

What does it take to get a thumbnail preview? Less than half of my files
show a preview and it would be nice to know how to control it.

The only setting I know of is in iProperties on the Save tab. Make sure "Save Preview
Picture" is checked, and Active Window on Save is set in your template files.

Check your template files iProperties->Save tab and make sure you have
it enabled in the first place.

You probably want to set it to "Active Window on Save".

The other two options are for static images.

I don't know if it still is the case, but there was a time when if you
edited part properties via Windows Explorer the thumbnail would get deleted.
I suspect that maybe on saving the property edit the thumbnail is recreated
however there is no graphics screen present so a blank thumbnail is created.
Have you edited properties from Windows Explorer?

The case that I know of that will result in no thumbnail being created is
the case where you create a new part or assembly in the context of an
assembly using the "Create In Place Component" command.

The reason for this is that by default the thumbnail is created by capturing
the current screen when the document is saved. If you create parts or
subassemblies in-place and then go back to the top-level assembly and
perform a save, the thumbnails for the parts and subassemblies is not saved.
This is because they are not the current document and the current screen is
showing the assembly. Depending of the current view, the parts or
subassemblies may not even be visible in the view. At the very least, the
thumbnail would not be representative of that file. If you edit a part of
subassembly and save while that part or subassembly is active, it will
create a thumbnail in that case. However, you'll frequently see the rest of
the assembly dimmed out, because that's what's currently in the view when
you save.
