When importing files to Inventor, you can copy the geometry to Construction
Folder in a part file. Then activate the environment and run Quality Check
on the surfaces. In the environment, there are several tools helping you to
find where the problem is and how to fix up bad geometry.

The main problem I have run into is when working with customer supplied
models. Just today I recieved a 3D AutoCAD drawing, I converted to an acis
file using Mechanical Desktop. Then I imported it to Inventor to make some
modifications to it. Once I send it to MasterCAM it has errors (face errors,
not coming in as a solid, open edges, etc). I finally get the file to work
after using a Solidworks Model Check program. This is a common place for me
when working with imported models.
