MATES ALWAYS GO IN WRONG DIRECTION - MORE OF A RANT THAN A QUESTION

This is more of a rant than an actual question unless someone has a good answer.

How come every time I try to mate something it seems to always go in the wrong direction?  I always have to go back and add or take out my minus sign.  I am usually going fast so I really do not pay attention as to which part I selected first.  The arrow doesn't seem help me either.

It is mostly just a nuisance that may cause me to throw my keyboard threw my window.

The order in which you select the Mates affects the outcome. I suggest spending a nbit more time testing the mates to train your brain which to select first/last.
