I am looking to buy a desktop computer for college. Something that can run Inventor and Solidworks.
My budget is a little of over $3000.
I have looked into buying the "Dell Precision T7610 Workstation"
http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/precision-t7610-workstation/pd
My concern is that, would I be able to build a better computer for around the same price. What do you guys recommend/think?
Also I had another random question, If I bought a cheap laptop and had my powerful machine. Would I be able to Remote Access the powerful machine from my laptop and use Inventor/Solidworks with out too much of a struggle.
Thanks,
Matthew
Look at a good fast "gamming" computer. Inventor a number of years ago switched from OpenGL graphics system to Direct-X. This no longer requires expensive "Quadro" graphics cards, a good fast "gamming" card will do. Solidworks, the last time I checked still requires OpenGL which requires a graphics card (hope I'm proved wrong).
I would bet that a good "gamming" laptop like an AlienWare Mx18 would work fine for both applications and you would still have money to spare over a Dell Precision.
I believe SW is OpenGL, so it will more far more fussy about graphics cards than Inventor.
As mentioned, Inventor should be happy with a gaming spec pc, so a GeForce would be fine (I would recommend a GTX 670 or higher) but Solidworks may well need a Quadro if it is still OpenGL... It might work with a gaming pc, but it might not be 100% happy...
It's a great move by Autodesk which is rarely touted as it means the hardware costs are considerably cheaper 😉

In general you can always build a cheaper/better computer than buying a preconfigured Dell workstation..
I really like cyberpowerpc.com
Its where I've gotten my last 2 computers (before that was an HP "workstation" that was nothing but problems)
